Ministry Of Trade And Industry To Assess Food Prices

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has noted the discussions in several quarters regarding the impact of COVID-19 on international food prices. In a statement, the Ministry noted that food price inflation averaged 2.5% globally, during the period July to December 2020. The Ministry has recently undertaken an assessment of food prices over the last seven months, and has acknowledged that the price of several items have increased. It should be noted the prices of other items such as toilet soap, powdered milk and chicken breast have remained stable while others such as brown sugar and chicken drumsticks have decreased. While these increases are driven entirely by international factors, the Ministry said it is an opportunity to expand its thrust towards increasing local food production.
