Muslim Woman Wins Case Against MTS

A 40 year old Muslim woman has won her case against the National Maintenance Training & Security Company Ltd for not being considered for a job because she refused to take off her hijab. The incident occurred in April 2017 when then 34 year old Aisha Sabur was called for an interview for the position as a security recruit. The company though asked that the woman remove the hijab, stating that its policy at the time required the hair, ears, and neck of applicants to be visible during the screening stage of the interview. She however refused due to her religious beliefs, to which the company said it was unable to proceed with the interview process. The woman was subsequently offered a settlement of monetary compensation and alternative employment following a newspaper article highlighting the issue. However, she refused the settlement of $30,000 and a job in the maintenance department. In its judgment on Friday, the Equal Opportunity Tribunal declared that the company discriminated against the woman on the status of her religion, and was ordered to pay her $35,000 on or before May 31st 2023.
