WASA: Collapsed Pipeline To Be Removed Soon

The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) is assuring that works to remove the 32-inch main and supporting steel structure from the Godineau River will begin next week. On Tuesday, residents of South Oropouche and environs called for the removal of the pipe, which they said could contribute to severe flooding in the Rainy Season. The pipeline and rack collapsed into the Godineau River in October last year, cutting off water supply to several areas, but WASA restored supply by installing a new 36-inch line that bypassed the failure structure. President of the Fyzabad Chamber of Commerce, Angie Jairam, said she agreed that this could cause a major inconvenience to areas such as Woodland and environs. Representative of the Woodland Fishing Association, Alvin Hoseinee, claimed that the rack poses a daily threat to fishermen. But WASA said it has secured the services of a suitable contractor for the removal, who will begin mobilisation in the coming days. The Authority's CEO, Kelvin Romain, apologised for the delay, but noted a suitable contractor was needed, given the complexity of the job. The disassembly and removal of the pipeline and supporting steel structure is expected to take four to five weeks.
