Gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa has reached alarming levels, despite existing legal frameworks and policies aimed at combating it. This video delves into the underlying causes, societal norms, and systemic challenges contributing to the surge in GBV cases. Prevalence of GBV: A national study revealed that over one in three women (36%) have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, with 24% reporting intimate partner violence. Cultural and Societal Norms: Deeply entrenched patriarchal norms and the normalization of violence contribute significantly to the perpetuation of GBV. Economic and Social Factors: High levels of poverty, unemployment, and inequality exacerbate the vulnerability of women and children to violence. Governmental Response: The National Strategic Plan on GBVF, launched in 2020, aims to address GBV through legal reforms, survivor support services, and community interventions. However, implementation challenges remain.
