Helen Bhagwansingh Dies

The Ministry of Trade and Industry is saddened to learn of the passing of business magnate Helen Bhagwansingh, the Founder of Bhagwansingh’s Hardware and Steel Industries Ltd. Mrs. Bhawansingh passed away on Sunday after ailing for some time. She was 83. Helen Bhagwansingh and her husband, Hubert, built Bhagwansingh’s Hardware and Steel Industries Limited with its first location in Port of Spain. The business was successful and led to the opening of other outlets in Chaguanas, Marabella, and Trincity. Minister of Trade and Industrty Paula Gopee-Scoon said over the years, Bhagwansingh’s businesses contributed significantly to growth and development in the commercial and manufacturing sectors, and collectively, these businesses have provided employment to many. Minister Gopee-Scoon also noted Mrs. Bhagwansingh contributed significantly towards many charities including making major contributions to diabetes education, research, and prevention in Trinidad and Tobago. In 2011, Helen Bhagwansingh was bestowed the nation’s highest award, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, for Community Service.
