The UWI Commemorates Simón Bolívar Day

The UWI St. Augustine Campus joined the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to commemorate the 240th birth anniversary of Simón Bolívar, who played a central role in the South American Independence movement. Nicknamed ‘The Liberator,’ Bolivar rejected slavery and called for its abolition in the Americas, leading revolutions against Spanish rule in several countries in South America. At the Commemoration Ceremony at UWI’s Alma Jordan Library, Venezuelan Ambassador Álvaro Sánchez Cordero said this anniversary marks a significant day in not just Venezuela, but many Latin American countries. And Professor of Latin American Studies at the UWI, Dr. Lancelot Cowie, said the Campus and, by extension, Trinidad and Tobago is fortunate to share this significant day.
