Celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2020

On May 3rd, Trinidad and Tobago join the rest of the world in recognizing World Press Freedom Day 2020 which UNESCO has titled "Journalism Without Fear or Favour". The Ministry of Communications has noted the improvement in Trinidad and Tobago's ranking on the World Press Freedom Index, moving from a position of 44 out 180 countries in 2013 to 36 out of 180 countries in 2020. Minister Donna Cox said even as the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for credible media voices to dull misinformation, the Government gives the assurance of continuing to forge mutually healthy, respectful and collaborative relationships with all arms of the local media. The Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago, in a release, praised journalists for their efforts during the COVID-19 Pandemic, citing different challenges of covering the pandemic thoroughly and enduring attacks from social media. While The Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasters Association in its official statement said journalists and media houses have proven how significant their roles are, during a time of crisis, such as this.
