During debate on the Bill in the Senate on Tuesday, Minister of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries, Clarence Rambharat, said one of the main objectives of the Bill is to protect and promote animal health and to establish standards for animal welfare. He said under the current legislation, the Minister of Agriculture lacks the power to make changes to the regulations. Minister Rambharat said the legislation will also see the creation of a Chief Veterinary Officer.
