Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi is defending the hiring of someone with ties to the United National Congress (UNC) to be this country's first Chief Public Defender. The Legal Aid and Advisory Head Office and the Public Defender's Department was officially opened on Monday at Stanmore Avenue in Port of Spain. Attorney at Law Hasine Shaikh was hired as the Chief Public Defender on March 2nd. Ms. Shaikh had previously served as a temporary senator for the United National Congress between June 2018 to June 2019. The Attorney General says since the announcement of her appointment, he has been getting a curious set of calls.
