The 12th Opening of the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago was not as flambouyant as in years gone by, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There was some contention, however, in the appointing of the Speaker of the House. The former Speaker, Mrs. Bridgid Annisette-George, was proposed but only after a division in the Parliament was her appointment cemented. On the eve of the new Parliamentary session Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar had written to Mrs. Annisette George objecting to her reappointment. The Prime Minister on the other hand said she would stay. Esmond Ford was named Deputy Speaker of the House and all other Members of Parliament took their oaths of allegiance.
