Heavy Rains Bring Flash Flooding

Cloudy skies and a deluge of rain greeted most of Trinidad and Tobago today. Although T&T is under no direct threat from Hurricane Teddy, the showery spells and convective activity that occurred this morning were as a result of a low level trough to the west of the region, induced by the cyclone. The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government has reported that the Disaster Management Unit of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation received six reports of homes being impacted by the heavy winds early on Saturday. Field officers were mobilised to conduct assessments and provide assistance to persons impacted in areas such as Gasparillo, Claxton Bay and Couva. Additionally, the Disaster Management Unit of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation received reports of flooding at the intersection of Clarke Road and Rochard Road. A report of a blown roof at Pancham Road was received and the Corporation has been mobilised to conduct assessments and provide assistance to persons impacted. The Ministry advised that as the rains begin to subside in many areas across the country, members of the public should not venture outdoors into the receding flood waters.
