Privatising The Port Authority Will Improve Efficiency

Minister of Works and Transport Rohan Sinanan, says the move to privatise the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago will build capacity, and improve service delivery to an international standard. During his contribution to the Budget debate on Tuesday, Minister Sinanan said that a management and maintenance plan at the Port was not sustained. He gave an example of the way business has been done at the port. Minister Sinanan said institutional issues at the port need to be addressed to bring the institution in line with global development in the region, particularly the Panama Canal. He said the Ministry has sought the input of the IDB and a formal assessment performed in 2019 made several recommendations. Minister Sinanan said a public/private partnership model for the Port Authority will improve financing for public infrastructure and development needs, will improve foreign exchange and will improve governance and operational efficiencies.
