National Trust Seeks To Restore Lion House

The National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago has reached out to the owners of the historic Lion House in Chaguanas to discuss options to restore the national landmark. Lion House was built in the 1920s on Chaguanas Main Road by the late Pundit Capildeo. It is considered a standing memorial to the indentured Indian immigrants who came to this country between 1845 and 1917. In the early 1990s, two attempts were made to restore the Lion House by the Capildeo family but the restoration process was incomplete, and deterioration of the landmark continues. The National Trust says the Lion House is on a list of sites that are worthy of national recognition and preservation. The National Trust says it is concerned about this and wants to discuss restoration with the family. The Lion House, called "Anand Bhavan" or "the Mansion of Bliss," was once the home of Nobel Prize winning author, Sir Vidia Naipaul.
