Famous Silk Cotton Tree In Golden Lane Falls

The village of Culloden in Tobago was cut off for a few hours on Wednesday after the famous Silk Cotton Tree in Golden Lane toppled over and blocked the roadway. Utility lines were also brought down, and two vehicles were damaged. THA Secretary for the Division of Industries, Quarries and the Environment, Kwesi Des Vignes, and representatives from the Tobago Emergency Management Agency ( TEMA) visited the site and the roadway was cleared. The silk cotton tree in Golden Lane has been a part of Tobago's cultural heritage for decades. Based on folklore, a slave woman, Gang-Gang Sarah, flew from West Africa to Tobago to take spiritual care of her people brought to Tobago as slaves. Legend has it that after Emancipation, she decided to go back to her homeland and attempted to take off from a high silk cotton tree. However, as she took off she fell to the ground and was killed. It is said because she ate salt during her time in Tobago, she lost her power to fly.
