Tobago Food Sou Sou

In recent times the word "sou sou" has attracted negative attention, however, one Tobago Non-Governmental organisation, 'Trinidad and Tobago Youth Will Rise' is using the term in a different way. For the past 6 years, they have spearheaded what they call a "Food Sou Sou." Speaking at a distribution ceremony on Thursday at Buccoo Tobago, the organisation's Ambassador and Political Leader of the Unity of the People Party, Nikosy Phillips, said the recipients contributed to the hampers they received. The financial contributions of recipients are collected from the month of January to December, then with the support of supermarket owners, grocery items are purchased at reduced costs and packaged. Former Secretary for Community Development, Dr Denise Tsoiafatt Angus, has been with the team since her time in office. She maintained her commitment and noted that the initiative should be used as a stepping stone for recipients. The project also covers Trinidad with over 1000 citizens receiving hampers, and in Tobago over 500 people benefited. The distribution will continue this weekend and the organization said it plans to include supermarket cards for next year's initiative.
