Trinidad and Tobago has recorded a 25% drop in murders for 2020 when compared to statistics for 2019. Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith in his end of year address said, the murder figures for 2020 are the lowest the country has seen in 8 years. According to statistics released by the Police Commissioner, in 2020, sexual offences dropped by 25%, motor vehicle larceny dropped by 19% and road traffic fatalities went down by 25%. Commissioner Griffith said in 2020 the detection rate also improved, with 91 out of the 395 murders being solved, as compared to 78 out of 539 murders solved in 2019. The Commissioner also spoke of measures taken in 2020 to improve all aspects of policing, including the formation of a road policing task force, and the establishment of a special operations response team in Tobago. Commissioner Griffith said in 2020, he also took a tough action against rogue officers.
