The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU) is accusing the management of Trinidad Cement Limited of "union busting" as the company signals its intent to retrench 12 employees. OWTU Chief Labour Relations Officer, Lindon Mendoza, said TCL sent letters of retrenchment dated January 6th to the 12 workers. Mr. Mendoza said the affected workers are skilled staff from various departments in TCL, with periods of service from five to 15 years. He claimed the decision to retrench workers is being driven by Mexican company Cemex, which has control of TCL. The OWTU Representative recalled that from 2018 to the present, the company has retrenched a total of 44 workers. He also claimed the company is considering retrenchment at its subsidiary TCL Packaging Ltd (TPL). He said this action would place 28 permanent workers and 12 temporary workers on the breadline.
