Roman Catholic Archbishop, Jason Gordon, says Ash Wednesday and Lent did not come about because of Carnival but the other way around.
He says Carnival then is a forerunner to the more serious Lenten season.
The method chosen to administer the ashes to the faithful came as a result of a small study done by the Archdiocese.
