Agricultural Economist, Omardath Maharaj, is pushing for higher awareness of the importance of food and agriculture on the National Development Agenda. He says since COVID-19 hit our shores ,the importance of feeding ourselves became an even more important issue which he has been tackling with the Yard Market initiative. The initiative, recognised by the UN in September 2020 as a public education and awareness activity, emphasises entrepreneurship as a way to tackle the individual and community need for better production of nutritious food. The Agro Economist says we must maintain a sense of urgency and crisis about food security and start planning food development to avoid price, production, and market volatility, resulting in a possible food chain crisis.
