Chair of the University of the West Indies Open Campus Council, Ambassador Dr. June Soomer, has been awarded St. Lucia's highest National Award, the Saint Lucia Cross. Dr. Soomer received the honour following Saint Lucia's 42nd Independence Anniversary Awards celebrations on February 22nd. Ambassador Soomer has been the chair of the Council since 2017 and is an accomplished author and historian. She is known for her work in the diplomatic, financial and education sectors regionally and internationally. Extending congratulations was Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of the UWI, who described the award as "an expression of her intellectual and professional journey."
