Protecting Citizens’ Privacy

The privacy of citizens is seriously and significantly compromised. So says Minister of Public Utilities and Member of the Joint Select Committee on Finance and Legal Affairs, Marvin Gonzales, during a meeting with officials from the Office of the Prime Minister today. He said the Data and Protection Act must continuously remain up to date to keep up with the fast-growing digital world. The JSC discussed the State's strategy for implementing unproclaimed legislation passed by Parliament during the last 20 years. He said there is public evidence of people’s privacy being invaded in the absence of data protection by State Agencies, as seen in the Cambridge Analytica incident. In December 2020, The Attorney General, Faris Al-Rawi, said the objective is to make the legislation more principle-oriented and less technologically specific.
