Ban On Alcohol Consumption Not On The Cards

A ban on the public consumption of alcohol as suggested by the Barkeepers & Operators Association seems unlikely at this time. Last week Friday, the Association called for a 60-day legal ban on all consumption of alcohol, pointing out that bar-owners cannot control drinking outside their premises. Speaking during the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 Update on Wednesday, Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh says he has been in contact with the Attorney General about the proposal. However, he says this may not be considered at this time. The Bar Keepers Association had stated that they cannot be held responsible for alcohol consumption occurring along public roadways, pavements and adjacent properties, since bar owners have no authority to direct or instruct anyone outside its premises.
