Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Dr. Carissa Etienne, says there is an urgent need for more vaccines for Latin America and the Caribbean as the region has been put to the test by the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at PAHO's Media Briefing on Wednesday, Dr. Etienne said Trinidad and Tobago was among two other Caribbean islands seeing a rise in COVID-19 related deaths. She said last week, there were over 1.2 million new COVID cases and 31,000 deaths reported in the Americas. Since the pandemic began in T&T in March 2020, the most deaths have been recorded in May 2021. Over 400 million COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the Americas, but Dr. Etienne said the majority was administered in the US. She said expanding the region's capacity to manufacture strategic medical supplies, especially vaccines, is a must for health security.
