The Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2021 has been passed in the Upper House with 28 members voting in favour of the legislation, and none against. There were no abstentions. The Bill, among other things, proposes public access to a national sex offenders register which will make it mandatory for adults convicted of sex crimes to be listed. The Attorney General explained that the amendment will allow sharing of information on the site but this is prohibited only if the 'share' is done with improper motive. Two years ago, the Bill was passed unanimously in the House of Representatives without amendment. Yesterday it was passed with amendments at the Committee Stage and was subsequently passed on its second reading.
