The calypso fraternity is mourning the death of one of its major songwriters, Winsford 'Joker' Devine.
Mr. Devine was one the most prolific composers in the industry. He is credited as having written more than 500 calypsos from 1970 to 2000.
Born August 15th, 1943 in Morne Diablo, Mr. Devine composed songs for many calypso greats including the Mighty Sparrow, Singing Francine, Crazy and Baron.
The chairman of the National Carnival Commission and calypsonian, Winston 'Gypsy' Peters describes Mr. Devine's contribution to the artform as "immeasurable".
Among his most memorable compositions are Sparrow's "saltfish" and King Austin's "Progress."
