The Ministry of Finance is currently reviewing the list of luxury food items being imported to Trinidad and Tobago. Responding to a question in the Senate on Tuesday, Minister of Trade and Industry, Paula Gopee-Scoon, said from 2018 to 2020, imports of selected luxury food items such as smoked salmon, lobsters, grapes, apples, pears, strawberries, peaches and other fruits was valued at approximately TT$78 million per annum on average. The Minister was asked if Government is considering implementing stricter controls on the importation of luxury food items, given the high cost of imported food items and the impact it's having on this country's already limited US foreign exchange. Minister Gopee-Scoon said a $500 million agriculture stimulus package has been allocated to develop and expand the agricultural sector. She said this funding and other measures will support the rapid expansion in production and marketing of selected high demand commodities.
