July 25th has been declared as World Drowning Prevention Day. Globally, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death. The United Nations dedicated this day for the global advocacy of drowning prevention in April 2021 through a resolution, moving towards a more sustainably developed world. In 2019, an estimated 236,000 people died from drowning, making it a major public health problem worldwide. Drowning is the 3rd leading cause of unintentional injury death, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the support of governments, civil society, academia and the media is needed to keep the spotlight on this preventable cause of death. The resolution calls on governments to develop drowning prevention programming in line with WHO recommendations.
