Oxford Street Renaming Being Considered

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds says Government remains prepared to listen, saying the renaming of Oxford Street will be considered. His statement comes after Chairman of the Emancipation Support Committee Zakiya Uzoma-Wadada last week asked for the street to be renamed Kwame Ture Street. Ture, a political activist previously known as Stokely Carmichael, who was born on Oxford Street, was heavily involved in the civil rights movements in the United States. The Emancipation Support Committee has been clamouring for the renaming of the street in recent years. Speaking on Emancipation Day, Minister Hinds promised this request will be given some consideration. Commemorating the day, Minister Hinds recalled the fight that slaves had to endure for their freedom. Minister Hinds was speaking during a virtual Emancipation Day celebration on Sunday which was carried live on TTT.
