Widows Not Left Behind

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services is committed to ensuring widows get the assistance needed to help them provide for their children. The promise came from Minister Donna Cox as she held a food hamper distribution for widows attached to the Widows Support TT and Widows Association on Tuesday. She notes with the hundred of deaths experienced due to COVID-19 locally, a significant proportion would have left a spouse and other family members in mourning. And even though the Minister says there will be Grants available to support widows, she intends to move beyond hamper and grant distributions to ensure they have economic empowerment. Meanwhile, President of Widow Support TT, Soraya Nanan, expressed her gratitude to the Ministry for recognising widows as a most vulnerable group in society. Minister Cox reminded that the Public Assistance Grant would also be available to persons whose household income is deemed inadequate as a result of the loss of a spouse or bread-winner. Those Grants amount to $1,150 for one person and goes up to $1,750 for four or more persons.
