TCL Workers Want COLA

One day after Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL) announced a price hike in the price of the commodity, workers are demanding that their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) be paid, as promised, on December 20th. Speaking to reporters outside of the TCL’s Claxton Bay Branch on Tuesday, workers said they have been owed COLA as far back as 2015 and were promised by the company that this would be paid on or before December 20th. However, following a meeting on Monday with the union, workers said a follow-up meeting has been rescheduled to January, meaning the monies would not be paid this year. Branch Secretary at TCL, Akini Solomon, described the latest development as a ‘slap in the face.’ He also assured that the recent announcement of a price hike in cement had nothing to do with their demands.
