The signs of difficulty with the price of food and feed were evident even before the COVID-19 pandemic.
With recent increases in feed prices, former President of the Trinidad United Farmers Association, Shiraz Khan, puts the blame on China and other countries buying up grain in bulk. Mr. Khan says that the Ministry's decrease in the price of flour for consumers did nothing to assist farmers. However, the farmers do have a plan to alleviate the problem. This plan suggests that local provisions can be used for the base of the feed, and fish from the fish industry to be used as protein within the local product.
Mr. Khan says that if the authorities would only contact farmers, a more structured approach to dealing with higher feed prices can be achieved.
