Parents are being urged to become tech-savvy to monitor their children’s social media usage. Head of the Special Victims Department of the T&T Police Service, Acting Superintendent Claire Guy-Alleyne, reiterated the importance of parents or guardians supervising their children’s activities, noting that they can be lured in by social media predators. Speaking at the TTPS’ Weekly Media Briefing, she also urged parents to be mindful of leaving children supervised by adults, and not their peers. She noted that parents or guardians are under legal obligation to report incidents of sexual abuse. As it related to child pornography, Mrs. Guy-Alleyne warned that any person who knowingly makes, or permits to be made any child pornography commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of $30,000 and imprisonment for 10 years.
