Wendell Eversley Makes Annual Walk To Commemorate 1990 Attempted Coup

After 32 years, survivor of the July 27th attempted coup, Wendell Eversley, says those in authority past and present have not done enough to recognise the events of that day. He said they don’t seem to care about the impact the attempted coup had on the country. Today, Wednesday, he made his annual trek from the Dial in Arima from as early as 5am to the Red House in Port of Spain. Mr. Eversley does the walk so that the Government can fully recognise the day of the attempted coup. He said he is grateful that he doesn’t have to do the walk in the Tobago. The coup was the Jamaat al Muslimeen’s attempt to overthrow the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. For six days, the group, led by Yasin Abu-Bakr, held hostages including then Prime Minister ANR Robinson and Government officials at the Red House and at State-owned television broadcaster, Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT). At least 24 people were killed during the six-day attack and many were injured.
