Rusty, the trusty German shepherd of teenager Danny Mitchell, is sold by a vagrant pretending to be Rusty's master. Far from home, the dog flees his new owners. He is found injured by little Jeff Neeley and his unemployed father, Virgil. Virgil is seeking work in Danny's hometown when Rusty is spotted.
